Mindy Kaling isn't engaging with the body-shaming cycle—and she's been direct about it.

The 46-year-old actress and producer has discussed her health transformation in a way that sidesteps celebrity gossip around weight loss. According to E! Online, Kaling told Bustle in May that her priorities have shifted over the years.

"When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons," she revealed. "Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes." The focus is on longevity, not appearance.

As a mother of Kit (8), Spencer (5), and Anne (2), Kaling says she needs to "live at least 20 more years." The Never Have I Ever creator is managing motherhood and a production company; staying healthy matters for the long term.

Kaling acknowledges that public figures have their bodies scrutinized constantly. "I know people are really interested in my body and the changes in my body," she told People in 2023, "and I think it's flattering—and sometimes it's just a little much."

She's experienced both sides of that scrutiny. In a mid-2000s writers room, someone suggested her character could lose 15 pounds. "This is my greatest insecurity and someone just called it out," she said on Good Morning America in 2021. "It's really devastating."

These days, Kaling stays focused on what works for her: small wins. She told E! News that working out leaves her "happy and joyful." Her approach involves fitting movement into daily life—a two-mile walk while calling a friend, or wearing workout clothes to add extra steps.

No extreme diets. No apologies. She's figured out what works for her body and her life.
