Jab We Met almost never happened. But Shahid Kapoor had other plans.
According to director Imtiaz Ali, the 2007 film exists because of Shahid's instinct. In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that he was supposed to meet Shahid to discuss an entirely different film. Neither expected to walk out with a romantic train journey in their pocket.
But then Shahid asked the magic question.
"Jab We Met happened because of Shahid honestly," Imtiaz recalled. "I was meeting him for something else and he asked me if I have a story where a girl and a boy meet each other on a train."
The twist? Imtiaz did have that story—but it was languishing on a shelf. Originally, it was supposed to star Bobby Deol. That version never took off.
When Imtiaz started narrating the premise to Shahid, something clicked. "He saw that I'm also interested while I was telling him the story," Imtiaz explained. "Then he said, why aren't we making this? Can I not do this?"
That conviction changed everything. Shahid didn't just say yes—he gave Imtiaz the confidence to pitch it to producers. "Through his confidence, we told the producer we're doing this, and you must give us a good budget, a good release," Imtiaz said.
The result was a defining film of its generation. Nearly two decades later, Kareena Kapoor Khan's Geet and Shahid's Aditya Kashyap remain iconic. The film's dialogues, music, and chemistry are still obsessed over by fans online.
