Plot twist: Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara's own kids are just discovering they're Hollywood royalty. The Spy Kids costars have raised their own generation of fans, and the family dynamics are hilarious.
PenaVega, 37, revealed that her eldest son Ocean, 6, was uninterested when she first showed him the 2001 action film. "He was a big Sharkboy and Lavagirl fan," she told E! News. "I was like, 'What the heck, dude?! You're cheating on me with Sharkboy and Lavagirl!' It was total betrayal."
Today, all three of her kids—Ocean, Kingston, 5, and Rio, 3—are obsessed. "Because his little siblings watched him watch the movie and he thinks it's so cool now, all of them are now watching the movie," PenaVega explained.
Ocean has become his parents' unofficial PR agent. During a recent airplane ride, he grabbed a stranger's shirt and announced, "Hey mister, you see my mom back there? She's in Spy Kids. And that's my dad, he's in Big Time Rush." PenaVega laughed at the unsolicited testimonial.
Sabara's kids with wife Meghan Trainor—Riley, 5, Barry, 2, and 5-month-old Mikey—are still having full-on is-that-really-you moments. "He'll do some double takes like, 'That's you?!'" Sabara, 34, said. "Or, if someone recognizes me, he'll go, 'How do they know you?' And I'm like, 'Don't worry about it. It's all good.'"
To mark the franchise's 25th anniversary, the costars recently surprised kids at a Salvation Army summer camp with spy-themed activities. "It's so surreal, it honestly doesn't make sense that kids are still watching it today," Sabara said. "I think it just holds up to what a fun movie it is that 25 years later it still feels fresh."
