Your TV remote just became a lot chattier. According to TechCrunch, Amazon is making Alexa+, its conversational AI assistant, free across all compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S., rolling it out automatically to users whether or not they subscribe to Prime. No app download required. No opt-in necessary. Just there.

Amazon previously charged $19.99 a month for Alexa+ to non-Prime members. Now it's free: AI is the default, and users are getting it whether they asked for it or not.

The upgrade brings conversational search, smart home controls powered by Ring camera feeds, and AI-powered content recommendations. Instead of scrolling or searching by title, users can ask for "a top-rated thriller" or "a historical drama with a strong female lead."

This is not isolated. TechCrunch reports that Google rolled out Gemini to Google TV earlier this year, and Roku upgraded its voice assistant to AI last year. The living room is becoming a battleground for AI adoption. These companies are betting that once the technology is free and built in, users will find it indispensable.

Amazon's own data supports this move: customers with Alexa+ have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV as they did with the original Alexa. People are spending more time talking to their TVs and less time passively watching.

Compatible devices include current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and third-party sets from Hisense and Panasonic. Users with these devices are receiving the upgrade automatically.

AI is no longer a premium feature or an opt-in experience. It is infrastructure. For those uncomfortable with that shift, the remote control has become a less autonomous tool.
