Your 16-year-old's virtual lover just got age-gated. According to TechCrunch, Apple is requiring all dating apps and AI companion platforms with sexual or romantic features to carry an 18+ rating on the App Store starting November 16.
The new rules affect apps like Character.AI, Replika, and xAI's 3D animated companions, platforms designed to feel like friends, lovers, and fantasy partners. These apps have been downloaded 220 million times globally, and they have become popular with teenagers. Now, Apple is forcing developers to disclose romantic or sexual features with new content descriptors.
AI companions differ from traditional chatbots. They are engineered to form parasocial attachments, feeling personal and intimate. A teenager downloading Replika gets software trained to roleplay as a boyfriend or girlfriend, complete with emotional dynamics that can affect how users view real relationships. Apple's concern is justified.
The announcement amounts to an acknowledgment that these platforms have operated with little oversight. If 220 million downloads include many from younger users, Apple is correcting what it previously allowed. The company has rolled out age assurance technology and expanded parental controls. This policy is the enforcement mechanism.
The location-sharing requirement is the more significant change. Apps must now disclose if they track and share a user's real-world location with other people. For dating apps, this is standard. For AI companions, it raises a question: why does an AI chatbot need to know where you are?
For developers and tech companies, the message is clear: Apple will block entire categories of apps if they do not meet stricter content standards. Developers have until November 16 to update their ratings. Some apps may disappear from the App Store entirely, while others will remove romantic features. Access to unregulated AI companions for teenagers will become more limited.
