Venture capital legend Cathie Wood has invested $20 million in Lucra, an eSports gamification startup that does not lead with artificial intelligence.

Dylan Robbins, founder and CEO of Lucra, raised serious venture money without positioning AI as the centerpiece. His white-label platform turns friendly competitions into loyalty programs for brands like golf courses, arcades, and pickleball clubs.

ARK Invest had previously invested in another company in the same space. Wood and her team still saw value in Lucra.

According to TechCrunch's Equity podcast, the funding round warranted a full conversation with Robbins—at a time when founders are attaching "AI-powered" to every pitch deck.

In venture capital, betting on a founder with solid execution and a real product can matter more than the latest technology buzzword. Lucra demonstrated that profitable business models can attract major investors.
