The body of a newborn was discovered in a portable toilet at Electric Forest Festival in Rothbury, Michigan this weekend, according to Rolling Stone.
An employee of the restroom vending company made the discovery on Sunday morning, June 28, during routine maintenance. The portable toilet was located on the festival's campgrounds, where thousands of festivalgoers had gathered for the annual electronic music celebration.
Michigan State Police are treating the matter as an active investigation. "If you were in the area and observed anything unusual, or if you have information that you believe may be relevant, we encourage you to come forward," the MSP said in a statement.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid speculation on social media "out of respect for the investigation and those affected."
Electric Forest organizers shared the MSP's statement on Facebook Sunday night. "HQ is heartbroken and knows that our Forest Family is as well," the festival wrote.
Festival reps have not provided additional comment beyond their initial Facebook statement. The investigation remains ongoing.
