Emma Roberts has secured a pilot order for Aquamarine at Disney+, based on the 2006 teen fantasy romantic comedy that launched her career.
Roberts is reprising her mermaid role and serving as an executive producer on the project, which will air on both Disney+ and Disney Channel. The pilot is being developed by original film director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum and producer Susan Cartsonis. Sarah Watson, known for The Bold Type, is writing the script.
The 2006 film followed Roberts' character Aquamarine, a mermaid who befriends two teenage girls and helps them navigate romance. According to Deadline, the new iteration is being crafted for the streaming era, blending nostalgia with fresh storytelling for both longtime fans and new viewers.
Roberts has continued work on American Horror Story and various film projects since the original release. The pilot is in active development.
