Gwyneth Paltrow is returning to acting. The goop founder has signed on to star in Netflix's adaptation of Belle Burden's memoir Strangers—playing the author herself. According to E! News, Burden is thrilled about the casting.

"We met in person, and we also met over Zoom, and I just think she's wonderful," Burden told E! News at Amazon Books' Literary Lounge event on June 10. "She really understood the book, she really connected with it emotionally, and I think she'll take great care of it."

This is Paltrow's first leading role since 2010's Country Strong—a 16-year gap. Burden made no secret of her excitement over the actress's return. "I think it's so exciting that she's returning to acting," she said. "I thought she was amazing in Marty Supreme, so I'm really excited about her playing the part. It's a great honor, really. I can't quite believe that she is playing me."

Strangers chronicles Burden's end to her two-decade marriage and her journey through heartbreak. The book became a bestseller three months after its release. It began as a personal essay—Burden wrote about her breakup for the New York Times' Modern Love column in 2023. "After it came out, two editors contacted me and said, 'This should be a book,'" she recalled.

The author was initially hesitant but ultimately committed to the project. "I was like, 'No, actually, I'm going to write a book. I have so much more to say,'" Burden explained. She credits timing for her ability to capture distance and emotion alike. "I think I started writing at exactly the right point, because I had some distance from it to have some perspective, but I also was close enough that I could feel the emotions."

Paltrow's casting shows that Burden's account of marriage and loss is reaching beyond the page.
