Filmmaker Jia Zhangke is building his empire beyond the screen. His distribution company has acquired two prestigious titles fresh from Cannes.
Unknown Pleasures Pictures, co-founded by Jia and veteran distributor Tian Qi, has secured Minotaur and La Gradiva. Both films premiered at the festival and are handled internationally by mk2 Films, the Paris-based arthouse distributor Jia has worked with for years.
The acquisitions position Unknown Pleasures Pictures as a curator of premium international cinema for Chinese audiences. The company is now a player in arthouse distribution, moving beyond a vanity project into a legitimate operation.
Jia's long relationship with mk2 Films surfaces again in this deal. By securing Cannes titles, he is positioning his company to become a gatekeeper for prestige content in one of the world's largest film markets.
For Chinese film audiences, the move offers access to bold, festival-celebrated work that typically struggles to reach mainstream distribution. For Jia, it expands an already substantial creative and business portfolio.
