John Early has always been drawn to the darkest corners of pop culture. Now, the Search Party star is turning that obsession into his directorial debut.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 38-year-old comedian reveals that his new film, Maddie's Secret, emerged from a pandemic rabbit hole. "During lockdown, I was watching the Bon Appétit test kitchen before bed," Early explains. "It was a huge fixation of mine. But then food content just... changed."
What changed? The internet's approach to food became "so pornographic," according to Early. He describes scrolling through increasingly graphic food videos—"low-angle videos of a girl emulsifying pasta," the suggestive sounds of "slapping meat" and "scraping crispy rice."
Maddie's Secret follows a chef at "GourMaybe Test Kitchen" (a reference to Bon Appétit) whose climb as a food influencer collides with her lifelong battle with bulimia.
The film's central conceit: Early plays Maddie himself in full drag—blond wig, breast prosthetics, hip pads. This is not comedic drag. Early commits to the role as a fully realized woman navigating pressures from her sapphic best friend Deena (Kate Berlant), her husband Jake (Eric Rahill), and the machinery of digital content creation.
"As an artist, I feel maternal," Early told Rolling Stone.
The result is a darkly comic examination of how the pursuit of online fame exploits our deepest insecurities.
