Is KJ Apa really the hip-thrusting, synth-pop heartthrob known as Mr. Fantasy? The Riverdale star says absolutely not—but Rolling Stone has the complete timeline, and it's getting messy.
Mr. Fantasy emerged from TikTok last August like Austin Powers with abs: mop-top bob, funky teeth, and hip swivels that the internet couldn't ignore. Within weeks, fans were convinced this British-accented pop sensation was actually the New Zealand actor who spent seven years playing Archie Andrews on Riverdale with red hair.
The evidence? Matching tattoos. An identical face. Those unmistakable hip thrusts. Both have impeccable abs and an obsession with revealing batrobes and tie-dyed Speedos.
When Mr. Fantasy dropped his self-titled debut single in late August, the music video only fueled speculation. There he was in short robes and snazzy suits, crooning "I can be your Mr. Fantasy/I see you looking my way" while writhing across the screen. TikTok commenters responded: "kj apa? what u doin queen," read the most-liked comment on his debut post.
The single exploded. It topped Spotify's Global Viral 50 chart and racked up over 10 million streams. His debut album, Fantasyland, is coming soon—and that's when Apa apparently decided enough was enough.
Now, with Mr. Fantasy's manager "John" posting Hollywood Bowl videos and the musician posting from LA locations, the actor has taken to Instagram to deny the whole thing.
But the internet doesn't believe him. With Mr. Fantasy's album about to drop, the mystery only deepens.
