According to Rolling Stone, legendary filmmaker Michael Mann accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a Los Angeles gun range on Halloween afternoon. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at The Range LA. Mann was briefly hospitalized; the injury proved superficial and subcutaneous.

The weapon discharged while holstered, catching Mann off-guard during what was supposed to be a routine target-practice session. Police and medical crews responded to emergency calls.

Mann is no casual gun enthusiast. The 84-year-old auteur has been an experienced target shooter for decades. His films, from the balletic gunplay of 'Heat' to the precision violence of 'Collateral' and 'Public Enemies', are known partly because Mann obsesses over authenticity in how firearms are handled on set. That knowledge of weapons apparently couldn't prevent an accident at the range itself.

Gun safety experts often point out that complacency is the biggest threat, experienced shooters can sometimes cut corners because they've "done this a thousand times." Mann's decades of expertise did not shield him from a freak discharge.

Mann was released from care and is back on his feet. No word yet on whether this will affect any upcoming projects, but given the minor nature of the injury, his work is expected to continue uninterrupted.
