Family bands are supposed to stick together. The Band Perry just proved that's a beautiful myth.
According to Rolling Stone, Neil Perry went public this week with a claim: he was "terminated" from the group his siblings founded because he refused to approve his sister Kimberly's new direction. Instagram posts dropped Tuesday night and Wednesday reveal a family rift that has been building since June 2024.
Kimberly appeared on Rolling Stone's Nashville Now podcast and suggested that both her brothers supported the band's rebrand. Neil says that's false. He explicitly told her not to misrepresent his position, then she did exactly that.
The core issue is the 2/3 partnership agreement. When Kimberly pitched resurrecting the band in May 2024, she presented Neil with three options: go as a duo, hold auditions for new members, or let her husband Johnny Costello join. Neil accepted the first two. Kimberly wanted the third. When Neil objected, the partnership agreement gave her and another party the power to force him out.
The Band Perry spent years building a career on three siblings in harmony. Now the band is fronted by Kimberly and her husband, while Neil is out entirely and Reid already left to work in artist management. This is the effective dissolution of the group's original identity.
A formal termination letter made the split final. Neil says he is moving forward with his own music.
