Pinterest has launched Ask Pinterest, an experimental app that replaces traditional search with a conversational shopping chatbot.

The social platform announced Ask Pinterest on Wednesday. Instead of scrolling through pins, users can ask natural language questions to receive personalized recommendations and inspiration. Planning a dinner party or furnishing an apartment—the app offers suggestions based on what users ask.

Pinterest is using the Taste Graph, its internal database mapping users to their aesthetics and interests, to power the recommendations. The app will launch in limited access initially, with the company exploring how it could eventually reshape the main Pinterest app.

The timing aligns with broader industry movement. Google is integrating AI into shopping. ChatGPT is testing agent shopping. Meta and Shopify are developing their own tools. Pinterest is building AI shopping features independent of licensing arrangements with competitors.

By launching Ask Pinterest as a standalone app, the company can test new features without affecting the main experience. Ask Pinterest can access users' saved Pins and Boards to refine personalization. Each interaction feeds into improvements for the flagship app.

Pinterest also rolled out AI tools for advertisers: a new AI assistant in Ads Manager (beta in the US) and Performance+ creative, a global model that helps brands select winning ads automatically.
