Reese Witherspoon has confirmed that Big Little Lies is returning for season three.
The actress revealed the news on The Tonight Show while discussing the 25th anniversary of Legally Blonde with Jimmy Fallon. When asked about the HBO drama's future, Witherspoon said: "It is in process for sure." The show will be based on author Liane Moriarty's forthcoming novel.
"There is a new book that comes out in September and so you'll see where we're at," Witherspoon told Fallon. "And we are making the TV based on that book." Witherspoon acknowledged uncertainty about the book's title, offering guesses like "Big Little Truths" and "One Giant Lie."
The confirmation comes after years of speculation since season two ended in 2019. The original cast—Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz—starred in the limited series that premiered in 2017. Season two added Meryl Streep to the ensemble.
Witherspoon previously told USA Today that the show has aged up its characters. "The children have grown up, they're now teenagers, it's been about 10 years," she said. The third season will follow these characters as they navigate parenting teenagers.
With Moriarty's new novel arriving in September, the framework for season three is taking shape.
