SNL UK's maiden series ended with its lowest viewership.

Sky's adaptation of the NBC sketch-comedy franchise hit its nadir this weekend when the season finale drew just 86,420 viewers. That was the show's lowest audience of the entire run.

The competition came from Eurovision Song Contest on BBC One. The musical contest proved far more popular with UK audiences than Sky's comedy sketch show.

Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa hosted the finale, but his presence failed to compete with Eurovision's pull on Saturday-night viewership.

SNL invented the late-night sketch-comedy format in the US. For Sky's UK debut to draw such thin crowds suggests the show will face an uphill climb in an already crowded comedy market.

Whether SNL UK can recover for a second series remains uncertain. These ratings are unlikely to encourage commissioning executives to greenlight new episodes.
