According to TechCrunch, Gritt—a startup founded by two Carnegie Mellon roboticists—just emerged from stealth with $32 million in total funding to automate the installation of solar panels. The series A round of $26 million was led by Obvious Ventures, with backing from Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investment. This is a signal that the infrastructure-building world is entering its AI era.

An eight-person crew installing solar panels traditionally handles about 800 panels per day. With Gritt's AI-controlled robots, they hit 3,000 to 4,000 panels daily. That's a 375–400% productivity increase. The company is already contracted to install 2.8 gigawatts of solar capacity in the next 18 months, with customers that include three of the top 10 U.S. power developers.

Gritt isn't building robots from scratch. Instead, it's renting off-the-shelf hardware—robotic arms from Kawasaki, skidders—and pairing them with proprietary AI models trained to handle the chaos of outdoor construction sites. CEO Puneet Puri tells TechCrunch that the breakthrough is creating intelligence that can work in "outdoor, chaotic environments" and generalize across different job sites. Industrial robots have historically failed in unstructured settings. But the latest generation of AI models may have finally solved it.

The solar industry is racing to deploy capacity fast enough to meet climate targets, but it's constrained by labor shortages. There simply aren't enough workers willing to do the dangerous, repetitive work of installing thousands of panels. Automation solves that bottleneck. If Gritt pulls this off at scale, it could become as essential to the clean energy transition as silicon is to semiconductors.
