Steven Spielberg revealed he scrapped a film about legendary Broadway composers Ira and George Gershwin that would have starred Colman Domingo — years before they collaborated on the alien thriller Disclosure Day.
"I was going to make a movie about Ira and George Gershwin, and I decided not to continue making it," Spielberg said.
The project is particularly notable given that Spielberg and Domingo — a two-time Oscar nominee — would later work together on the sci-fi film. Why they initially connected for the Gershwin biopic remains unclear, but the abandoned venture suggests an early creative alignment between the director and actor.
Spielberg did not explain the specific reasons for abandoning the project. Whether it was a script problem, creative differences, or a shift in his priorities, he did not say.
The decision to walk away from the Gershwin story did not affect his relationship with Domingo. The two found common ground on Disclosure Day, proving that abandoned projects sometimes lead to other collaborations.
Fans will have to wonder what a Spielberg-Domingo film about the Gershwins might have looked like, and whether it could have joined the ranks of his most recognized biographical dramas.
