Tom Hanks and Tim Allen aren't taking their return to the Toy Story universe lightly.
The Oscar-winning duo sat down ahead of Toy Story 5's June 19 premiere to discuss the weight of delivering another blockbuster for a fanbase loyal since 1995. "We do not take this lightly," Hanks told Entertainment Tonight on June 9. "We do not want to let that audience down because we got them when they were 6 and now they're 36."
Behind the scenes, these two have built a friendship that extends beyond the screen. Allen revealed a touching tradition spanning years. "We bring little gifts to each other," the Home Improvement star said to E! News at the Toy Story 5 premiere in Los Angeles. "We've been doing it for years. Little special pens or staplers."
In Toy Story 5, Hanks returns as Woody—the cowboy who rode off into the sunset with Bo Peep in the last film—while Allen brings back Buzz Lightyear. The toys face a new enemy: tech takeover. According to the trailer, Jessie (Joan Cusack) grows concerned when Bonnie receives an electronic device called Lilypad that's stealing playtime. Woody and Buzz work to stop it.
Fans will head to theaters on June 19. Thanks to E! Online's exclusive behind-the-scenes secrets, the Toy Story franchise started with a different vision—Buzz wasn't even supposed to be an astronaut, and Woody was originally the villain.
With this chemistry between Hanks and Allen, audiences have a solid entry in the franchise.
