Weird Al Yankovic is bringing Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical to Broadway. The creative team includes theatrical heavyweights across direction, writing, and production.
According to Rolling Stone, the musical is being directed by Alex Timbers, who directed the stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge. The script comes from Scott Brown and Anthony King, who wrote Gutenberg! The Musical! and Beetlejuice. The show is in development with Tony Award-winning producer Seaview, known for Every Brilliant Thing and The Fear of 13.
The production will feature Yankovic's parody hits: "White & Nerdy," "Amish Paradise," "Eat It," "Smells Like Nirvana," "Like a Surgeon," and selections from Running With Scissors.
Yankovic offered his own take on the project: "Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I've always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community. Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it's 'severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,' and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately."
Timbers called Al one of his comedy heroes, saying, "What Al, Anthony, and Scott are creating is unexpected, subversive, meta, and hilarious." The show centers on creativity, individuality, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself.
After five decades of turning pop culture into comedy and selling over 12 million albums, Yankovic is getting his Broadway moment.
