Remember when your phone was just a phone? Yeah, neither do we. But according to TechCrunch, a startup called Autonomous has found a simple way to address your scrolling habits: make them require physical effort.
The Autonomous Key is an NFC gadget that forces you to physically touch something to unlock TikTok, Instagram, or whatever app is consuming your attention. No more tapping "unlock" on a screen.
At $9, it undercuts rivals like Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59). Leave the key in another room, and opening Instagram becomes a deliberate choice requiring actual effort, not a reflex.
According to TechCrunch's testing, the device works with Android 8.0+ and iOS 15+, can lock apps for up to 60 minutes per scan, and pairs with multiple phones. No subscriptions, no hidden tiers. The companion app includes AI-powered summaries of your app usage.
The rise of digital wellness tools reflects a shift in how consumers approach technology. For years, social platforms were designed to make leaving as difficult as possible. Now consumers are paying to make their phones harder to use—a direct counterweight to the engagement-focused design of mainstream apps.
Bollywood actors and creators managing large social followings have spoken about screen-time burnout. This is no longer a Gen Z problem. Anyone maintaining a public presence while protecting mental health faces constant pressure from notifications.
TechCrunch identified a weakness: NFC scans sometimes require multiple attempts, making the device unsuitable for locking essential apps like email or messaging. There is also the risk of losing the key, though the company says a backup unlock method is coming.
The Autonomous Key shipped in beta earlier this month and comes in five colors. It won't eliminate tech addiction, but it introduces friction where there was none before.
