Artificial intelligence is taking over one of China's most iconic literary properties.
Utopai Studios and Chinese powerhouse Huace Film & TV have partnered to create Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years, a completely AI-generated animated series positioned as the opening chapter in a planned theatrical franchise.
The production uses Utopai's proprietary AI system called PAI, which will handle character animation and storytelling. The series reimagines one of China's most influential mythological classics with ambitions to launch a full-scale movie franchise.
This collaboration signals a shift in how major studios approach IP adaptation. Rather than assembling traditional creative teams, Utopai and Huace are betting on AI to deliver cinematic-quality content at scale and potentially at faster speeds.
Journey to the West has been adapted countless times across centuries, from classic novels to blockbuster films. This AI-generated version positions itself as a tech-forward take on the 400-year-old source material.
The move will ignite debate among industry traditionalists and tech advocates. Can AI capture the nuance and cultural depth of a literary masterpiece? Or does this represent the future of premium entertainment production?
The collaboration between Utopai and Huace will test whether AI-generated content can succeed in high-stakes adaptation of classical works.
