Drone delivery is already operational and growing. Alphabet-owned Wing is expanding into seven more U.S. cities through its partnership with Walmart, backed by substantial volume.
The expansion targets Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Salt Lake City. Wing and Walmart will operate in nearly 20 U.S. markets, with plans to add Orlando, Tampa, Charlotte, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and Miami.
Wing has completed more than 1 million commercial deliveries. These are not beta tests or pilots—they are completed transactions.
Wing's chief business officer Heather Rivera stated: "Our work with Walmart has shown that drone delivery isn't just a novelty, it's a service many customers count on multiple times per week." The top 25% of Wing customers order via drone three times a week.
Walmart began experimenting with drone delivery years ago. After successful pilots in Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta, the company committed to expansion. In January, the companies announced plans to bring on-demand drone delivery to an additional 150 Walmart stores. The rollout is now underway.
What once appeared as a speculative technology has become operational infrastructure. Wing and Walmart are delivering groceries and other goods via autonomous drones across multiple U.S. markets.
