The BBC has acquired Ghosts Australia, according to Deadline Hollywood. The latest instalment of the hit supernatural sitcom franchise follows successful UK and US versions.

The eight-part Australian series stars Tamala (known for Cleverman and Nowhere Boys) and Rowan Witt (Totally Completely Fine, Book Of Mormon) as a couple who inherit a crumbling country manor and discover they're not alone.

The original British Ghosts became a ratings success, prompting a US version on CBS. Now Australia will have its own version through BBC Studios Australia Productions.

The acquisition reflects the BBC's strategy to position Ghosts as a global comedy franchise. Viewers across three continents can now watch different casts handle the same premise: a couple buys a haunted house, meets its angry residents, and chaos follows.

The Australian version arrives as Ghosts has proven its appeal across multiple markets. That track record typically prompts broadcasters to invest in further adaptations.
