Billy Ray Cyrus revealed he battled a near-fatal case of sepsis in 2024 that resulted in temporary vocal paralysis. The country legend detailed the health crisis in an interview with People.

"It was a very broken moment of my life," Cyrus said. The sepsis diagnosis came with vocal paralysis that threatened the one thing that has defined his career: his voice.

Cyrus credits his recovery to his 5-year-old grandson Bear, the son of his son Braison Cyrus. The child walked up to his grandfather and said: "Try again."

"My little grandson Bear looked at me and said, 'Try again.' And up until that moment, he had never spoken to me at all," Cyrus revealed. "I wasn't even sure if he knew my name." He said those words shifted something. "In that moment I thought, He's telling you something. Is it about love? Music? Somehow, I got to try again at both."

Cyrus is calling his recovery a "miracle." He is preparing for the June 16 release of his new album, The Hill.
