Cynthia Erivo has been cast to play Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother and a former Black Panther activist, in the Snoop Dogg biopic, according to Rolling Stone. The film, directed by Craig Brewer, is set for release in August 2027.
Afeni was not just Tupac's mother but a political activist who inspired some of his most iconic work, including the 1995 ballad "Dear Mama." After Tupac's murder in 1996, she spent decades protecting his legacy and overseeing his estate until her death in 2016.
Erivo's casting suggests that Brewer and producer Snoop Dogg are treating this as a serious project rather than a celebrity vanity vehicle. Her roles in Harriet and elsewhere demonstrate an approach to prestige work that goes beyond surface performance.
The ensemble is substantial. Outer Banks' Jonathan Daviss plays Snoop, while Panic's Camron Jones takes on Tupac. SwayvoTwain, son of D'Angelo and Angie Stone, plays the Notorious B.I.G. Myles Bullock plays Dr. Dre, Tre Hale plays Suge Knight, and Lauren London plays Snoop's mother.
Brewer, who directed Dolemite Is My Name, is handling a narrative that spans multiple figures and eras. Production is already underway in California, with the August 2027 release date confirmed.
For Indian audiences, this project carries significance. West Coast rap shaped global pop culture, and Snoop's story, through his friendships, rivalries, and the system around him, examines survival and legacy.
Erivo's casting signals that this story is receiving A-list treatment across the board.
