Bulgaria just delivered the biggest surprise of Eurovision 2026. Dara and her infectious anthem Bangaranga took home the Crystal Microphone at the 70th annual Song Contest in Vienna, an underdog victory few predicted.
The win is massive for Bulgaria—it's their first Eurovision triumph since entering the competition in 2005. The country had skipped the last three contests before returning this year, among only a handful of nations opting back in despite the controversy surrounding Israel's participation.
Bangaranga wasn't front-runner material heading into the finals. Rolling Stone's expert predictions didn't include Dara in the top five, and casual Eurovision fans overlooked this Bulgarian entry. The voters made a different choice.
According to Dara, Bangaranga is about the special energy everyone carries inside—that feeling that everything is possible. The song draws inspiration from kukeri, an ancient Bulgarian ritual where men parade through villages in elaborate furry costumes with bells and animal masks. It proved to be exactly what Eurovision 2026 wanted.
Israel's Noam Bittan came in second with Michelle, securing the runner-up spot amid the boycott controversy that had shadowed the entire contest. The spotlight belongs to Dara—another reminder that Eurovision's most surprising moments come from unexpected places.
