Cable TV may be gasping for air, but The Cable Guy is streaming to glory. Hulu has ordered a comedy pilot inspired by Jim Carrey's 1996 cult classic, bringing together two New Girl alumni.

Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. are starring in and exec producing the project. The pilot order arrives on the 30th anniversary of Ben Stiller's pitch-black comedy that introduced audiences to the cable installer.

Johnson and Wayans Jr. spent years together on Fox's New Girl, where their chemistry worked well. They are now applying that comedic rapport to this Cable Guy revival, which will capture the spirit of the original while updating it for streaming.

Hulu's decision to develop a property this specific — not a major IP rebrand, but a deep-cut Jim Carrey movie callback — suggests the streamer is betting on nostalgia. If the Cable Guy worked once, it could work again.

Johnson has remained active in comedy since New Girl ended, while Wayans Jr. has worked in film and television. Reuniting them on a project like this makes sense. Fans of both actors and the original film have expressed enthusiasm on social media about seeing the two work together again.

The pilot will determine whether this Cable Guy universe can sustain a series. With Johnson and Wayans Jr. involved, the project has a solid foundation.
