Koe Wetzel is in a very different place than he was two years ago—and his new album proves it.

The Texas country artist, who broke into the mainstream on 2024's 9 Lives, just dropped The Night Champion, his sixth studio album and first since that career-defining moment. According to Rolling Stone, the album is deeply introspective—almost like he's closing a book on an entire chapter of his life.

Since 9 Lives made him a household name, Wetzel has gotten engaged and become a father. In a preview at a Nashville speakeasy late last month, he told the publication: "When I talk about The Night Champion, and the sound up to now, it's almost like closing a book."

"I don't know what's coming," he admitted. "I'm always going to be brutally honest when it comes to the lyrics, but I do feel like this record really embodies the wild, crazy, says-whatever type of guy I've been for 10 years."

The 11-track LP reunites Wetzel with producer Gabe Simon, who has worked with Noah Kahan. Neither of them set out to make a full album at first. "Before we knew it, we had a record," Wetzel recalls.

The album's lead single, "Hurts Like You," addresses toxic relationships. Across the rest of the tracklist, he owns his vices on "The Man," gets introspective on "Time Goes On," and embraces a breakup on "I'll Lock Up."

Then there's "Circus," an outside song written by Sam Harris that serves as Wetzel's commentary on stardom. The lyric: "When the lights come up, I'm still the same sad fuck. Guess the circus wasn't what I thought it was."

Producer Simon summed it up plainly: "We're trying to find the perfect balance between understanding what he's saying and him being fucked up. There's a sweet spot."

Wetzel kicks off the U.S. and Canada leg of The Night Champion World Tour in July—a four-month arena and amphitheater run.
