Gebeka Films has acquired French distribution rights to Louise Bagnall's animated feature Julián ahead of its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival later this month, Deadline reports exclusively.
The film comes from Cartoon Saloon, the Irish animation studio behind The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. Cartoon Saloon has received five Academy Award nominations.
Bagnall has Oscar nomination credentials. With Cartoon Saloon's track record and Bagnall directing, Julián is among the animated features drawing attention on the festival circuit this year.
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival is where the animation industry premieres and celebrates new work. The French distribution deal signals industry confidence in the title. More regional deals are likely to follow as the festival generates attention around the film.
Details about the film remain unreleased, but Cartoon Saloon's visual style and Bagnall's direction suggest a strong entry when Julián reaches French screens.
