Ferris Bueller's Day Off hit screens on June 11, 1986. It's been 40 years.
That John Hughes film grossed over $70 million and turned Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara and Jennifer Grey into some of Hollywood's biggest young stars. Ferris Bueller became a pop culture fixture.
Broderick earned a Golden Globe nomination for the role. Since then, he has starred in The Cable Guy, Inspector Gadget, and Godzilla. He voiced adult Simba in The Lion King. On stage, he won two Tony awards for Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and performed in the musical comedy The Producers with Nathan Lane.
Broderick has recently guest-starred on The Conners and appeared in Painkiller, Elsbeth and Only Murders in the Building.
Mia Sara made a red carpet appearance last summer at the premiere of The Life of Chuck — her first red carpet appearance in 15 years.
The cast reunited virtually in June 2020. On Josh Gad's YouTube series Reunited Apart, Broderick reflected on landing the role. "John Hughes called, and everybody said he's the Steven Spielberg of teen movies," he said. "I rented Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles and loved them. It was an easy yes."
In 1997, Broderick married another '80s icon.
