Move over Silicon Valley—Europe's tech scene is getting its moment. According to TechCrunch reporting Friday, French AI lab Mistral AI is in early discussions to raise about €3 billion ($3.5 billion), with sources revealing a €20 billion valuation on the table.
That's nearly double the €11.7 billion valuation the company received in its Series C round last September. The startup launched in 2023 with the mission to "put frontier AI in the hands of everyone."
Mistral has positioned itself as the European alternative to American tech giants. While OpenAI has raised $186 billion and Anthropic has raised $161.25 billion, Mistral has raised roughly $4 billion to date.
The startup has taken a different path to AI development, releasing foundational models with open weights that anyone can customize. This approach aims to distribute AI capabilities more widely.
The company has also leveraged geopolitical dynamics. As European countries seek distance from American tech dominance, Mistral has courted governments and major European corporations. It is setting up a data center near Paris and has partnered with France's military, Luxembourg's government, and several European companies.
The company is betting that European sovereignty and local innovation will appeal to regulators and enterprises wary of American tech dependence.
Yet the valuation gap reflects reality: American AI labs lead in revenue, model adoption, and enterprise demand. Mistral's rumored raise is substantial, but the company remains behind.
Mistral did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The funding round remains unconfirmed.
