Nvidia isn't just dominating Silicon Valley anymore—it's literally going to the moon. According to TechCrunch, the chip giant has partnered with Lunar Outpost, a startup building robotics for space infrastructure, to deploy its Jetson chips on the lunar surface. Nvidia will have the first GPU to touch moon dust.
This isn't a vanity play or a tech billionaire's fever dream. NASA is actively paying private companies to explore the lunar surface ahead of plans to send human astronauts back to the moon by 2028. Nvidia is betting on a lucrative future where space exploration runs on its AI chips.
Lunar Outpost CEO Justin Cyrus is comparing Nvidia's Jetson platform against his company's existing spaceflight compute system, testing pros and cons for extreme environments. The goal is to deploy GPU-powered systems where no silicon has gone before. Cyrus told TechCrunch his team is blending deterministic and physical AI systems, running both in parallel to unlock capabilities that "no one's done before."
Nvidia is diversifying its space bets. Beyond the Lunar Outpost partnership, the company announced a deal with Firefly Aerospace—the first private company to safely land a robot on the moon—to deploy Jetson chips on a lunar-orbiting satellite. That satellite will process imagery to map the moon and track the growing number of robots on its surface.
The moon is brutal. While GPUs orbiting Earth operate in relative comfort, the lunar surface swings through extreme temperature changes and bathes in unfiltered cosmic radiation. Most space-rated chips have never had to handle that kind of punishment. Nvidia's Jetson was designed to be compact and power-efficient for robotic systems—it lets rovers process sensor inputs locally, so they react to their environment faster. That architecture now has to survive the moon.
Nvidia is becoming essential infrastructure for the next era of space commerce. If these missions launch successfully on SpaceX's Falcon 9 before year-end, Nvidia will have proof that its ecosystem works at the edge of human capability. That credential attracts defense contracts, government partnerships, and a new revenue stream.
