Sundar Pichai announced that Google's Gemini has reached over 950 million monthly users, placing it within reach of the billion-user club that includes Search, Gmail, YouTube, and Chrome.
Gemini has tripled its user base in one year. In February, the app had 750 million monthly active users. It is now approaching a milestone that would establish Google's presence in yet another major category.
ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in June, but OpenAI faces mounting competition. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai attributed the growth to new features like Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, a personalized AI agent now available globally. Google is competing through rapid feature development.
For the Indian market, Gemini's strength extends across platforms. The app has become significant on iOS, with over 137 million downloads in the last year, including releases like the Nano Banana image generation model. This cross-platform presence matters in the competition for global users.
According to Sensor Tower's latest State of AI report, ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants dropped below 50% for the first time, while Gemini's share rose to 27.7%. This represents a significant shift in market distribution.
Google's search product has not suffered from the AI assistant's growth. Its AI-centric Q&A mode crossed 1 billion users this quarter, driving incremental search query growth. Pichai's strategy that AI and search could coexist has proved effective. Rather than cannibalize search, Google's AI tools have reinforced it.
Hardware optimization has been central to scaling. Google has reduced the cost of running AI mode through engineering improvements while rolling out new models and features.
Gemini's trajectory suggests a billion-user milestone could arrive within months. When it does, Google will have another major product milestone, and it will signal that the AI revolution's early phase belongs to the search leader, not to the startup initially expected to disrupt it.
