Olivia Rodrigo capped her inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival in Irvine, California, with a headlining performance featuring Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, and Stevie Nicks. According to Rolling Stone, the three artists joined Rodrigo on stage.
McLachlan, who founded Lilith Fair in the late '90s, performed "Building a Mystery" and "Angel" with Rodrigo. The performance of "Angel" was a tribute to Dolly Parton, who died on August 25. McLachlan called Parton "the O.G. matriarch" and country music's "biggest philanthropist."
Rodrigo and Morissette performed "Ironic" together, a track from Morissette's 1995 album Jagged Little Pill. According to Rolling Stone, Rodrigo has cited Morissette as an influence since childhood, telling her in a 2021 Musicians on Musicians interview: "I remember hearing 'Perfect' and I was like, Oh my God... I told my music teacher a couple days after: You can write songs like that?"
Rodrigo and Nicks traded verses on "Landslide" while dancing together. Nicks told the crowd: "She reminds me of me when I was her age a hundred years ago. I'm somewhat awestruck that she could do all this... with this grace."
The festival drew on a lineage of female artists supporting one another rather than competing. Lilith Fair became iconic for creating space for women's voices. By donating $10 million to nonprofits benefitting women and girls, Rodrigo's Daisy Chain follows that model for her generation.
Rodrigo grew up listening to these artists. Now, at 21, she is orchestrating festivals, selling out arenas, and commanding the respect of the icons she idolized. When Morissette performs "Ironic" with someone who discovered songwriting through Jagged Little Pill, the female music establishment has effectively said: you're one of us now.
