Proton has released Lumo 2.0, its upgraded privacy-focused AI chatbot. The new version includes features that bring it closer to ChatGPT and Google's Gemini while maintaining data privacy.
Lumo 2.0 can now recognize and generate images. Users can upload a photo for the chatbot to analyze, edit, or use as a basis for generating new images based on prompts.
Response speed has improved significantly. Lumo 2.0 responds to queries up to 76% faster than the previous version. For complex problems, a new "thinking mode" is designed to handle queries requiring deeper analysis.
The Projects feature—which allows users to upload documents and work across email and cloud storage—now includes user-controlled persistent memory. Lumo can retain preferences across conversations rather than starting fresh each time.
"Lumo 2.0 has been re-engineered from the ground up," Andy Yen, Proton's founder and CEO, said in a statement. "The introduction of thinking mode gives it powerful new capabilities. Lumo 2.0 demonstrates that users no longer need to choose between powerful AI capabilities and meaningful privacy protections."
Proton employs zero-access encryption architecture. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and accessible only to users. Proton does not log sessions on their servers and states that they will never use conversations for AI training or sell user data to third parties.
A free public version is available immediately, with Plus and Professional paid tiers offering additional access and resources.
