Rose Byrne's Golden Globes moment came with a twist: her longtime partner Bobby Cannavale wasn't there to witness her Best Female Actor – Musical/Comedy win in January. The reason? Her bearded dragon.
"I want to thank my husband, Bobby Cannavale," Byrne said while accepting her trophy. "He couldn't be here because we're getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey."
Their sons Rocco, 10, and Rafael, 8, had insisted the family follow through on their promise to acquire Benny Blue the Bearded Dragon. No bearded dragon acquisition, no dad at the Globes—those were the house rules.
Byrne explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the reptile expo "is the place to go" and it would be a "parent fail" if they didn't deliver. Cannavale got his scales, the kids got their scaly friend, and Byrne got a story for every talk show circuit.
Cannavale made it up to her. He was front and centre when she competed for her first Academy Award in March. According to E! Online, he is expected to attend her Tony Awards nomination on June 7 in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play category for Fallen Angels.
After 14 years together and sporting a sparkly left-hand ring for a decade, the couple rarely uses "boyfriend" and "girlfriend"—they prefer "husband" and "wife." As Cannavale told Vulture in 2020: "'Boyfriend and girlfriend' feels so young. 'Partner' feels so sterile." Their commitment is real.
