Just two weeks after banning Anthropic's most powerful AI models, the Trump administration has reversed course and authorized their use.
According to TechCrunch's reporting, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has authorized Anthropic to release Mythos 5 to more than 100 specific U.S. government agencies and companies. The decision also permits non-American employees at those organizations to access the model—a reversal from the original ban that excluded anyone without U.S. citizenship.
Lutnick's memo to Anthropic's Tom Brown stated: "I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model."
Mythos 5 and its sibling Fable 5 were removed from circulation after researchers reportedly breached their security guardrails. The government has now concluded the model's cybersecurity applications warrant restoration despite these concerns.
Anthropic posted on X: "We're restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we're continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again."
The reversal comes from an administration that campaigned on tighter AI restrictions. The two-week window raises questions about what changed in the security posture. The decision suggests national security considerations may override broader AI policy concerns.
Anthropic's non-American staff have also regained access after being affected by the initial ban.
