Will Ferrell walked out for his sixth time hosting Saturday Night Live's Season 51 finale ready to deliver the goods—but a very familiar face had other plans. According to Rolling Stone, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith emerged from backstage to greet the audience instead, immediately launching into Ferrell's hosting introduction.
"I'm thrilled to be back here hosting Saturday Night Live," Smith-as-Ferrell said, laying the impersonation on thick. "I was a cast member here for seven years, and now I'm hosting for the sixth time. Amazing!" The bit was flawless—same deadpan delivery, same energy, same everything.
Then the real Ferrell appeared backstage in an identical suit, and the chaos began. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" the actor demanded, launching into the bit with perfect comedic timing.
Smith played it straight, insisting he was "hosting the show," which sent Ferrell into overdrive. The actor then joked that Smith had assaulted him backstage and that "Lorne had to give me mouth-to-mouth."
When Ferrell kept pressing Smith about his presence, the drummer eventually caved: "Okay, I'm the musical guest tonight." Wrong answer. Ferrell swiftly corrected him—Paul McCartney was the musical guest, thank you very much—and promptly shooed Smith off the stage.
The moment had all the hallmarks of classic SNL chaos: two people in identical suits, perfect comic chemistry, and a bit that played on the long-running joke about the two men being separated at birth. Smith actually did pull double duty that night, serving as McCartney's drummer during the legend's performance.
The SNL crossover landed well with viewers.
