Shekhar Kapur and A.R. Rahman have announced Masoom: The New Generation, a contemporary reimagining of Kapur's 1983 film. This time, Rahman is not only composing the score but also serving as co-producer.

This is the first time the two have collaborated in this capacity. Kapur and Rahman have previously worked together on Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Bombay Dreams, and Why? The Musical, but this marks the first time Rahman will take on creative and financial responsibility alongside the filmmaker.

According to the makers, Masoom: The New Generation will explore family, identity, love, and migration through a 2026 lens while preserving the emotional core of the original. Kapur said in a statement: "For a long time, I've felt that the themes of Masoom deserved to be revisited through the lens of today's world. Rahman has always had the rare ability to create music that speaks directly to the soul of a story and its audience."

Rahman said working with Kapur is "a deeply enriching experience." He added: "When he shared the vision for this film, I felt compelled to be involved beyond the music. There's something timeless about Masoom, and reinterpreting that emotional world for a new generation feels both exciting and necessary."

The cast includes Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur. The film is in pre-production with shooting expected to begin later this year and a worldwide theatrical release planned for 2026.
