David Dhawan isn't holding back. The legendary director sat down at a PVR film festival fireside chat with his son Varun Dhawan and admitted that Kalank's 2019 box office failure depressed him.
"There's one film of his that didn't work and it depressed me," David revealed. "Karan Johar must have sold his last shirt to make that movie!" Kalank was the period drama that flopped despite major star power and a reported massive budget.
David claimed he confronted Sanjay Dutt directly about the decision. "I asked Sanjay Dutt, 'Tu kyun kiya yeh picture? Madhuri Dixit thi isliye?'" he said, drawing laughs from the audience. The question suggested the Madhuri Dixit reunion was the real draw.
David added that Sanju was "very upset during that film," indicating creative frustration on set. Varun said the team had worked intensely on Kalank, which made the commercial failure harder to accept.
The father-son duo are preparing for their upcoming comic caper Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, releasing June 5. David's admission about Kalank shows that even major budgets and star power cannot guarantee box office success.
