Shadowcast Pictures, a rental house that supplied cameras, lighting, and filmmaking gear to productions since 2008, is shuttering its doors in the coming weeks.

Owner Jay Ellison blamed the closure on a combination of the pandemic, the Hollywood strikes, and the LA fires. Each setback compounded the others.

Corporate consolidation and mergers have squeezed mid-sized players like Shadowcast, leaving independent production houses scrambling for alternatives.

Independent filmmakers, indie productions, and smaller studios who relied on Shadowcast's rental inventory now face limited options. When equipment suppliers fold, smaller producers lose access to affordable gear and flexible rental terms.

The closure is the latest casualty from the 2023-2024 strike period. Between the writers' strike, actors' strike, and ongoing production slowdowns, Hollywood's infrastructure is still recovering.

An 18-year-old company with established relationships and inventory couldn't survive the combination of pandemic losses, strike closures, and fire damage. Other mid-sized suppliers may face similar pressure in the months ahead.
