Richard Mettler, a film editor who worked on Jamie Dornan's Anthropoid and Anthony Mackie's Desert Warrior, has died. According to Deadline, Mettler died on June 1 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City following an eight-year battle with cancer. He was 56.
Mettler edited the 2016 spy thriller Anthropoid, which starred Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy and chronicled WWII resistance fighters. The film earned widespread critical acclaim, with much of that praise directed at its sharp pacing and editing.
More recently, Mettler edited the 2025 historical drama Desert Warrior, featuring Anthony Mackie in a lead role.
Early in his career, Mettler worked on music videos, developing the rhythmic sensibilities that informed his approach to narrative film editing. He became a trusted collaborator for directors seeking editors who understood visual storytelling and emotional depth.
