Sam Heughan's Jamie Fraser is shot dead by Ferguson during the climactic battle in Outlander's series finale, airing May 15 on Starz. The show, however, leaves the outcome unresolved.
As Claire (Caitríona Balfe) cradles Jamie's body, the screen replays their entire time-traveling journey across multiple centuries. Jamie's ghost appears to move through the memories as Claire's hair turns bright white—fulfilling a prophecy that her healing powers would reach full potential at that moment.
Then comes the twist: both Jamie and Claire gasp for air. The screen cuts to black. Fans are now divided on whether he is actually dead or whether their love literally brought him back to life.
The finale kills off two major characters before this moment: Percy Beauchamp (Michael Lindall) and time-traveling Captain Richardson (Ben Lambert). After Grey (David Berry) shoots Richardson, Beauchamp agrees to sign a document confessing everything—then takes his own life with a shotgun to protect their secret romance.
For the cast, wrapping eight seasons was difficult. Caitríona Balfe revealed to Elle that the weight of it all did not hit her until filming the final day on set. "The last scene that Sam [and I filmed]..." she began, before the emotional reality seemed to overwhelm her recollection.
Fans have spent years theorizing about Frank's prophecy that Jamie would die. The finale delivers the ultimate answer: maybe. Whether Jamie Fraser survived is now each viewer's interpretation—and that is the most Outlander ending possible.
