Euphoria wrapped on Sunday night with a finale that killed off Zendaya's character Rue Bennett from an accidental overdose. Creator Sam Levinson has now confirmed the death was intentional.

In a behind-the-scenes HBO segment that aired after the finale, Levinson explained his reasoning. "It felt like an honest ending," he said. "The honest ending is people like Rue don't make it. I think in the end, I wanted to tell an honest story about addiction."

The finale also featured a dream sequence involving Angus Cloud's character Fezco, using unused footage of the late actor, who died in 2023. Levinson described the emotional weight of that choice. "I wanted to tell the story for Angus and for people who weren't granted a second chance," he said.

Levinson had originally planned a different ending. Cloud's death in 2023 forced a change. "Once he passed away I had to re-conceive the script," he told the New York Times. "You can't tell a story about addiction today without the very real consequences. Most people don't get a second chance."

The showrunner stressed the show's core message: the brutal reality of fentanyl and addiction. "If you are experimenting or taking drugs today, it's very possible it'll kill you," he said. "The story is a tragic one in the end — but it's also the truth."
