IIM Bangalore's Centre for Digital Public Goods has opened the CDPG National Student Case Challenge 2026, asking students to solve a live problem drawn from DigiYatra, India's facial recognition-based airport entry platform. The competition carries a Rs 5 lakh prize pool, with national finals on September 30, 2026, NDTV reported.

Entries close September 7, 2026, according to India Today. The Centre for Digital Public Goods has built the challenge around an operational brief rather than a hypothetical one. Students will study a system that is already live at airports and propose improvements to it.

A live system, not a sandbox

DigiYatra sits within a larger shift in how India builds citizen-facing digital infrastructure. The airport entry platform uses facial recognition to reduce queue time and has moved past the pilot stage. A case competition built on a deployed system poses a different problem. Students are not designing from a blank page. They inherit constraints: enrolment, identity verification, privacy, security, edge cases, user consent.

The case method rewards structured diagnosis over rapid prototyping. For a system like DigiYatra, where the hardest problems are not code but consent, interoperability, and operational resilience, this is the better training ground. A student team that studies passenger flow data, maps failure modes, and proposes a governance fix builds the capability that operators need. The challenge asks for a diagnosis and a set of implementable choices.
